Indian Independent Cinema - checklist

I've caught a lot of Indian Independent Cinema of late, as almost everything else, there's a formula behind it all. Even chaos, rebellion and movement against the status quo has a formula behind it.

For an Indian indep (really, a non-Bollywood) film to be successful or even exist, it usually has one or
more of the following components:

1. One character must have a relationship with a non-Indian. Usually it's an Indian female hooking
up with a white male.

2. One character will invariably be gay.

3. One character must whack off (no matter how irrelevent to the story line it is)

(Icing on the top is jabs and criticism on the caste system, but this isn't always included)

Let's do a quick rundown.

Fire - points 2 & 3
Bend it like Bekham - points 1 & 2
Bride and Prejudice - points 1
Dharm - points 1 & caste system
Bavandar - points 3
East is East - points 1
Loins of Punjab - points 1

I'm open for any more additions to the mix.

hmf -- the comments were close on the thread where the alpha discussion was happening, but i just wanted to mention that in the case of the alphas i consider appealing, the majority of women DO also find them appealing. they are all tall, physically fit, extroverted, great conversationlists, funny, well read, worldly, extremely intelligent, and very, very succesful with women. those are alpha traits, no? just minus the financial success. i think portmanteau had it right with the theory that perhaps they're intelligent enough to choose to live outside of the system and still be considered extremely attractive.

nala, Its been a while since I've seen it. but I think you're right.

Milli,

I agree those are alpha traits, however, money is also an alpha trait when it is sought after.. What I was charging against PM was her conflation of money with larger more general alpha traits.

Money can be a trait, just as long as it's admitted that THATS what's being sought after.

by the way, are you the same milli from before

Check semi indie stuff like Matrabhoomi, Hazaaron Khwaisian Aisi, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Bheja Fry etc. You've been watching the lower end of the non mainstream world that is purely obsessed with being different without being good.
