And another thing...

As Valentines Day nears..

99.9% of women I'd say haven't the slightest spiritual bone in their body. That is, they usually are incapable of thinking beyond the physical, and material.

Instead of having their mouths water at roses and heart shaped chocolates, if they thought about the other 364 days of the year, and how they were treated, and didnt let a single rose define the entire year - then maybe they might have a shot at choosing more success driven mates.

Boss, what's your opinion about the latest poverty porn driving the mutineers into neocolonial orgasm? I refer to "slumdog".

THE_HMF said...

what does that have to do with anything? and people who criticise SDM are missing the big picture. a white movie going audience is learning to appreciate a foreign movie, foreign setting, and all that.

Anonymous said...

Um... guess you missed "Crouching Tiger...". Won a buch of Oscars almost 10 years ago. Slumdog is not the first foreign film in that respect.

THE_HMF said...

who said it was the first? but thank you, you've proved my point, how did crouching win those oscars? by pandering to American expectations as to what an "Asian film" should be - martial arts, epic.

So you have to operate within that framework, SDM is basically a sappy love story, BUT it's a completely Indian story. Foreign protagonist, foreign land. just like cthd.

Lets look at the data (you know how I like to keep referring to those pesky facts)

http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2000/DRAGN.php

http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2008/SLUMD.php

in 11 weeks, SDM has had a total us gross of $57 million

in the first 11 weeks, CTHD had around $55 million,

About the same, but, SDM I predict will over take it.

By a "bunch" you mean 4 oscars, best foreign film, best cinematography, best score and best art direction. nothing to thumb at, but SDM I think will do better.

What about "Gandhi" in '82 ? Won 8 Oscars. Did it pander too ?

Slumdog Crorepati as poverty porn?

More like India-lite 101.

That movie did not show even a FRACTION of the poverty and misery of Dhairavi.

Do some research! Or go there yourself.

Why do middle class and wealthy desis always want to pretend that poor people don't exist?

Why do they want to X them out as if they are not even human?

Disgusting attitude. Shameless.

How about adopting some poor slum kids instead? How about marrying some young men and women from the slums instead? How about DOING SOMETHING TO HELP, rather than being ashamed of them?

So Gandhi was anti-poor because he opposed Catherine Mayo type portrayals. For heaven's sake, the movie shows a little blue boy in the midst of a riot. what's next little jew boy egging on the murderers of jesus christ. It's not even worth having a discussion with these people defending their western overlords. they're concerned about poverty!! hahaha that's rich.

I disagree with Gandhi's view on that subject matter. He could have worked in conjunction with Mayo, what is the harm?

I also disagree with Gandhi's repressed views on women and rape.

Some of his other views are OK though.

Would you prefer that all media - books, movies, etc, portray India has a wealthy and healthy country?

What if Slumdog Crorepati portrayed India has a fantasy land of wealthy, loving and happy people. Would you have an orgasm that "wow! finally Bharat is shown in correct light!"???

Or would you protest saying, "how dare these Firangs show our country in a positive light only! How dare they not represent our millions of poor and downtrodden!"

?????????

Slumdog Crorepati was LIGHT on the poverty in Mumbai's slums. Or have you never been there?

Are you like Amitabh Bacchan who lives in a multi crore mansion and does his best to ignore the slums he has to pass through in order to get to the studio for his next shoot.

Dayum!

Is this a joke??? Mayo does not care about Indian poverty. the british are the very ones who created the poverty in the first place. It is just western propaganda to beat the colonized over the heads with. There is even a scene where an american tourist hands "slumdog" a few dollars and says ”This is real America, Son”.

"300" portrayed Persians as transvestites, effeminates, and degenerates. If someone points out that this fits into western propagandist discourse about the Orient, that person does not turn into a eugenics proponent.

Hello?? this is basic stuff......

Hello?

Mayo was not British. Get out of your colonial mindset. MOVE THE HELL ON. Empower yourself. Stop blaming the British the Shitish for all of India's problems.

Mayo was a woman, like me, who was concerned about Indian women and girls, otherwise she would not have written her book in an effort to bring attention to their plight.

You are obviously a desi dude who has no idea about the ethos of feminism or sisterhood. Well, here's a clue - it's beyond f*ckin borders, son.

As a desi woman I come against men like you ALL THE TIME. Your denial is nothing new to me.

I read Mayo's work and there is NOTHING in that book that is not taking place even today in India, including child marriages, but of course you wouldn't think they are happening because you are not there amongst the people they happen to.

In my opinion we need MORE people like Mayo, not less of them. We need MORE books like her's, not less of them.

But what we really need, more than anything, is for desis to GET OUT OF DENIAL and start exposing the "underbelly" of India and helping the suffering masses to emerge from the filth.

But you are too busy celebrating "INDIA SHINING" and the overglorified I.T. sector.

Get over yourselves!

And by the way, "Indian underbelly" is an oxymoron. Because all of these things are happening on the top, out in the open to millions upon millions of people. If anything, "underbelly" applies to India Shining and it's hi-tech culture. That is the MINORITY in India.

Man, I think I need to buy you a trip back to India.

THE_HMF said...

Alright people. this is grand here, but we've completely veered off topic. The real topic is the materialistic and physical nature of women, how they'd benefit from a return to grassroots spirituality.

How many women meditate would you say?

Anonymous said...

Boss, let me just post 2 points then I'll desist from engaging the colonized.

1. Google image search "Slumdog Protest"

2. Slumdog was described as "Poverty porn" by a british columnist.

Anonymous said...

I'll address your quetions, HMF, after this;

A British columnist describing Slumdog as "poverty porn"???

So what?

They probably suffer from "British Guilt".

I said it before and I'll say it again - that movie was LIGHT on the poverty and and misery that exists in India, very light. If anything, they didn't show ENOUGH misery to be realistic.

The book, written by an Indian by the way, is about a slum boy who makes it rich. So then you expect them to not show his slum life? My god, that is part of the PLOT!

How would you suggest they do it?

Or are people not supposed to make movies about poor people and only rich people?

You remind me of the U.P.ites who protested WATER being filmed in their midst. And, by the way, the only protestors were MEN. I didn't see any female protestors in the newspaper photos, and I certainly didn't see any WIDOWS protesting (and U.P. has alot of those due to Vrindavan, one of their havens). Finally the crew had to go to ANOTHER COUNTRY to film!!! Wah!

HMF, I go to alot of "spiritual" events and the women ALWAYS outnumber the men there. So on average, at least in India and USA, women are participating in spiritual activities more than men.

Anonymous said...

Boss, I got to respond to this one, whose diatribe is getting longer and longer.

>>> WATER being filmed in their midst. >>>

You mean that film where they show some guy masturbating to Ramayana with an old mute lady is in background.

Anonymous said...

No, that was FIRE.

WATER was about widows.

MEN protested it. NOT the widows. In fact, widows wanted it filmed there!

As far as masterbating in front of other peeps. How many times I have been in an India cyber cafe and the guys are wacking off???

Too damn many!

How many times some desi dude has exposed his (chota) lingam to me in India?

Too damn many!

When I saw that scene in FIRE I was like, "yep, been there, saw it".

LOL.

They need to get laid.
